Stars (our Sun included) form inside large nebulas of gas and dust in space. A single nebula forms tens to hundreds of stars, so our Sun did form with other stars. The stars that form together in a nebula eventually go there separate ways, so to speak, but systems of two, three, or more stars are quite common.
Here's a nebula where stars are forming right now:

Solar nebula which was created from another star going Supernova a long, long time ago.
Initially there were many stars formed close to the sun, but over the past 5 billion years they've all been moving apart and are now quite far away.

In the beginning . . .
Actually, a star (like our sun) will coalesce from gas cloud (nebula) composed mostly of hydrogen gas. A nebula can result from a nova or supernova, however, these two types of events will send a shock wave through the nebula to begin the coalescence. Over time (millions and billions of years) as the "clump" of gas coalesces, gravity continues to pull more gas to the clump. As the size increases, so does its mass and gravity. When it reaches a critical size, nuclear fusion begins which emits light (and other radiation). This light is what we see as a star.
