Everything you say makes such perfect sense, I don't even know what I could add.

I think your question belongs under mental health because the fact is that we do address problems as they arise, but we have neither the foresight or power of God to avoid them completely. You reach this point by ignoring all the times we've recognized problems and fixed them. Nobody thought mercury would be a problem, but we're removing it from use. PCBs were once touted as the ideal transformer oil because it didn't burn, and it's now banned. CFCs are being replaced with HCFCs which will probably be replaced in turn with an appropriate technology. Double hulled tankers are required as single hulled tankers are retired. We don't add lead to gasoline anymore, we changed the engines to not require it. Unused dams are being torn out to return rivers to their previous state. Superfund sites are being cleaned up.

This is largely a problem of gullibility. People who want political power want to keep others in a constant state of panic because they're more easily manipulated. Landfills are a good example. Not only are they cleaner than ever, they represent only a miniscule amount of land use and when retired are capped and can be used for recreational purposes. In addition, it was only recently discovered that the weight of the contents of landfills compresses what's on the bottom so effectively that they can be filled with much more than they once expected. Yet a politician could score points with the voters by acting angry about out-of-state trash being buried HERE!

You may be intelligent, educated, caring and principaled but if you remain gullible then you are part of the problem, too.
