Last year I did cheerleading and I was a backspot because we stunted with elementary students, but this year at my new high school I couldn't try out for cheer because I'm a new student. However, I talked to some of the cheerleaders and they said that if I make the team next year, which I probably will, I could be a flyer. I"m 5'2 and about 115 lbs. How should I prepare to be a flyer?

As a current cheer coach, I am glad to see you preparing ahead of time for what may be one of the most important positions in the squad. A flyer has to have poise and stamina.

Work on standing in a liberty, arabesque and heal extension every chance you get. The better you can do this on your own on the floor....with no bobbles, the better chance you will have to complete the stunt without a fall.

Your bases are there to help you, but you are ultimately doing the work. Tighten your body as you are being lifted and held...this will help with height and wobble factor.

I always tell my girls to focus on the center of their body. The core of your body. This will help you.

Most of all, listen to the count....and don't cradle before then. I have seen serious accidents occur when girls do not listen to their team mates.

at 5'2" at 115 pounds, it is likely that you might be a flyer, however, as a coach, I not only look for the smaller girls (which are easier to lift), but the girls that can control their body movements once in position. If you think that you can nail that stance everytime you go up....you have what it takes to be flyer!

Good Luck

Don't be nervous cheerleading is a very exciting sport ! What i would do is everyday day do 30 press ups 30 crunches hold plank for 30 second and lots of exercise mainly working legs arms and stomach . When your in the air just lock your legs squeeze and you'll be fine - Don't chicken out !! Try everything and make sure you put your self up for trying new stunts because then you will hopefully be a main flyer and that is so much more fun !!

you need to keep straight whenever you are up in the air flying and dont look down,a nd whatever you do...DON'T bend your legs. when you are going up, you need to push off teh bases yourself in order to help them take you up. and dont rely on teh bases, this job has a lot of responsibiblity because you have to do much yourself. liek when they are bending to throw you up, you need to keep your legs straight, and when they throw you, you need to brong your legs up before your behind falls. you canot just fall back into their arms. you have to move your legs up before they catch your behind. tahts is onthing you need to be sure of, that your feet/legs are always higehr than your behind, becaus if they are not, than you can messup and get injured. when you are preparing to go into a prep, dont lean to much forward, that will make you lose your balance while you are going up and make you fall. but that doesnt mean to lean back either. our coach always told us to keep our butt out and chest out. and to have our knees at a 90 degree angle. that is teh best way to do it.when you do it that way, you are evenly balanced and it is way easier. When you ar being moved into an extension, it is very important that you stay straight dont lean forward, or backwards, just stay straight and look straight ahead. it might feel funny, but it is better tahn falling forward or backward.

i hope these tips have helped you in many ways.

a couple things you need to know when you fly are to be tight, dont bend your knees when you are up and cradling, squeeze you legs together, and another thing i learned at a clinic was when you go into a "sponge" (this is where you are getting ready to go up and your feet should be in your bases hands) you should be able to hold your self up... you shouldnt rely on your bases or spotters help... it is up to you... have fun!
