What a load of rubbish that there's no countryside in London! The South Downs are only an hour away from London Victoria by rail.

In fact all of East Sussex is within an hour's train journey so take your pick!

If you don't even want to leave London then the Wandle Trail near Colliers Wood tube station feels like a country walk:

Beyond Streatham Common is the Rookery a beautiful oasis of landscaped garden where shakespeare plays are performed in summer. Beyond Looking out from this hill you can forget you are in London. Further on still is Norwood Grove, a beautiful area of historic buildings, woods, rose gardens, nature reserves etc.

There is plenty of lovely countryside around London due to the 'Green Belt' act, enacted after the 2nd world war to restrict development. Try the Darent Valley (Kent). Train from Blackfriars to Eynsford, Shoreham or Otford (45 mins). Try the Chiltern Hills (Buckinghamshire). Best access is from Wendover (train from Marylebone - 40 mins). Try the Surrey Hills. Train from Waterloo or Victoria to Boxhill station (50 mins) - you could easily walk to Gomshall and return from there to Waterloo or Victoria (changing at Guildford/Redhill).
Plenty of scope in other places. You would be hard pushed to find a train less frequent than once an hour. Ask for a day return for the cheapest deal. Get hold of an Ordnance Survey 1:50000 map if you can of the area you require (readily available from booksellers) - then plan your walk. All footpaths clearly marked.

Many of London's outer boroughs contain sections of countryside or large country parks (although these are usually surrounded by development). Check out the wildweb website. Many of these locations have good transport access.

A good way to explore this area is the London LOOP (London Outer Orbital Path). See TfL site, click on any outer borough to see descriptions of route sections.

Ummm...
There isn't any 'countryside' in London.
You could try Kew Gradens though... it is a lovely place to lose youself for a few hours.
