The answer requires an opinion..here goes..when we take something for granted say an overgrown lot that's in our neighborhood. Then, that lot is bulldozed, the underbrush and trees that supported a multitude of wildlife is gone. Suddenly we notice that there are less birds, no rabbits or squirrels, more insects-mosquito's for example. We noticed the birds, the rabbits etc. but we didn't tie them to the overgrown lot. Now that it is gone we suddenly see its value. If we had understood its value to start with we would have understood the consequences of its loss. So it is with all things. If we took the time to understand all these things we would in fact take very little for granted. Everything has consequences..the butterfly flapping it's wings in china effect..

When you take things for granted you expect the consequences and therefore if theyturn out as expected you do not question it or realise you have taken it for granted.

If they dont you start to analyse what went wrong and realise you took it for granted and should have done your home work, then perhaps you could have altered the course of events.

I think that is meant to read that when we are forced to deal with consequences then we realise we have not been aware of neglecting our responsibility to a person or situation but we are human and fallible and the important thing is to draw from the consequences some learning so as not to repeat that error.

Because by the time you see the consequences you have already blown the "gift" that you have received, and turned your back on the blessings and bounty that came with what you took for granted.

its because if u take something for granted then it is more of a shock to the system when its gone because u take it for granted so we notice the consequences more.
