How do people know which hurricane is coming? They all have names, so how do they determine which is which? I don't get it at all. Is there some kind of criteria for these kinds if things? Or do they just randomly pick a name and call it, say, Hurricane Ivan?

They pick all the names in advance, usually by a couple of years, and they're always in alphabetical order and alternate between female and male.

it goes alphabetically...one letter after the other...beginning the year with letter "a". They (who the **** are "they", don't ask me ;0) pick a name beginning with the letter they're up to and there it goes...you have let's say alfred, then beatrix, then carolyn, etc, etc...
