At my annual exam I spoke with my doctor about trying to conceive. She said that after I stop taking my birth control pills my husband and I should wait 3 months before trying to conceive so that my periods would become more regular. Lately I have been reading a lot of articles that say it doesn't matter if you wait 3 months from taking your last pill, or 1 day. Does anyone know what risks are involved with getting pregnant right after stopping bcp? My cousin got pregnant that way and she had a good pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby girl.

AFter being on the pill for 8 years, my doctor said to stop and wait 4 months before trying to get pregnant. Who am I to argue with someone who has a medical degree? So in the meantime, while waiting, I used Fertility Awareness Method (charting temperature and cervical fluid). This got me used to the signs and signals of my body and so on the 5th month, I was ready. And indeed, I got pregnant.

This time around (i'm 2 weeks pregnant), a new doctor told me to wait 1 cycle before trying and so I did. I also charted and now am pregnant on the 2nd cycle after the pill.

I suggest listening to your doctor and I recommend using Fertility Awareness Method (through the book, "taking charge of your fertility" by Toni Weschler). This will let you know if you are even ovulating. SOme women off the pill can take up to 12 months before they start to ovulate again, and for others they ovulate right away.

Good luck. Oh, and in case your doctor didn't tell you...it's a good time to start prenatal vitamins.

My OB said it doesn't matter how soon. So, we started trying right away as soon as I came off my pills. It's just been a month and it hasn't happened yet. But hopefully before too long......

With my second son I was pregnant within the 1st month of coming off my pills. Had a very healty little boy! He's 8 now.

It's mainly just a factor of how long it takes your body to get back in synch after being on the pills. Good luck!

Sometimes depending on the woman- the pill takes longer to get out of your system- they say to wait a period or two..so this way here the pill would be out of your system..

before hand- your pills effect the egg- so that it doesn't mature & your ovaries aren't as fertile.. if you try to conceive before hand there could be side effects such as ectopic pregnancy- implantation bleeding-learning disabilities- or other birth defects associated while the pill is in your system

However- for some they can still get pregnant & have a normal baby, but its down the road sometimes there would be effects..

Underdeveloped intestine- tongue tye- language delay- walking delay

I was told they want you to wait so that they can have more accurate dates. However, really unless you are charting ovulation there is no such thing as an accurate date.

But jackass doctors have decided that due dates are set in stone instead of two weeks either way like it used to be so they are inducing at 40weeks and 1 day, or 41 weeks if you are lucky. Of course if you dates are wrong they baby may not be ready if they induce at "40 weeks" and are really more like 37/38 weeks.

I've also heard it is better for you body to wait but I have never seen any *actual* studies that prove it.

The ONLY problem that you will have if you get prego your first month is knowing the due date. Because you have not gotten regular periods, they could not estimate an exact due date.
According to my Dr. The pill leaves your system in 24 hours (that is why you can get prego if you miss one pill).
Remember some people keep taking the pill and don't know they are prego!

I've heard that before (waiting 3 months) but my doctor, who gave me LOTS of info about getting pregnant, didn't tell me a thing about that. Also, my mom, who's an OB-GYN nurse, didn't tell me a thing about that, either. My doctor did say that most likely I wouldn't get pregnant in the first month, but it's been known to happen.
