typically , the new model year starts in June (05/85 would be an 85 model year, 06/85 would be 86 model year)

Sounds like year and month. 85/01 is January 1985, and 85/12 would be December 1985.

The manufacturing date is a bad way to verify model year. 2007 Toyota Camry's for example were produced as early as May and June. So you would see a 05/2006 production date and it is truly a 2007. The best way to check is with the 10th digit of the VIN code which is also on the door (near the production date) and also on the dash visible through the windshield in front of the steering wheel.

using the build date on a car is not a bad way to find the year....Ford is really bad about mid year changes and you need to know month and year of vehicle
