My daughter is interested in being a serious gymnast. She is 11 and will be about 5' 8" and wants to try to compete at World Championships. Anyone know how tall the average competitive female gymnast is? And for a young girl who has just begun her gymnastic career. Any advice?

Truthfully, I think she's too old to start training for the olympics. Also depending on where you live she'll have to move away to train. Another thing to consider is how expensive it is to train for the olympics. You need to carefully evaluate whether your daughter has the talent required for an olympic gymnastic career. I was a gymnast for over 10 years, not olympic caliber. I'm 37 years old and am in pain every single day, I never get relief. All my doctors agree that the cause is the abuse I heaped on my body during my gymnastics training. Sometimes I see a chiropractor 3 times a week. I take muscle relaxors and prescription anti-inflammatories on a regular basis, because sometimes that's the only way I can sleep. I trained for about 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. That's not enough training for a olympic gymnast. You seriously want to think about this; there are only a dozen olympic gymnast at a time. That's a pretty small chance for a lifetime of pain. No one tells you this when you're 15 and think you could never get hurt. You will get hurt as a gymnast; it's a just a question of how bad.

Svetlana Boguinskaia and Svetlana Khorkina are considered tall for a gymnast and they're both right around 5'4". Check out the last link below, Maria Olaru retired because the new code of points was not suited to her height and she's only 5'3". The best advice I can give her is to practice her routines, just do routine after routine and make sure you like your floor music because you have to listen to it over and over and over, etc.

The gymnasts from the 1950's and 60's were considerably taller than today's gymnsasts, but as far as the tallest in recent years to win gold, I believe that would be Svetlana Khorkina of Russia, who is 5-5 1/2.

I think it was Svetlana Khorkina at 5'4". I'm an aspiring olympic gymnast also and i'm 5'4". It definitely pays to be shorter though when doing gymnastics. The heights range from 4'7" to 5'4"-ish. There aren't height requirements, that's where most gymnasts stand though. Best of luck!

the tallest was some russian women, but she was still very good at gymnastics..i see that some people wrote that your daughter may be too old to start training and i agree with that to an extent..it takes a lot of time, effort, and money to be a well trained gymnast, but if your daughter is really devoted to the sport, don't let her give up on her dream..she'll always regret it..i know i did.
