A good way to explain a food web is to have students create their own. When I was volunteering with a wildlife rehab center last summer, we did some educational programs at a local camp. Each of the students was given an element that would be in a food web, animals, plants, soil, the sun, etc. Then we would start with one of these, probably the sun is the easiest, and then go from there to show them how each depends on one another.
