A ghostwriter is a person, usually a published author or journalist who is paid to write a book/essay/article whatever, for someone else, who gets the credit.
Celebrities will often employ ghostwriters to pen their autobiography. Publishers employ ghostwriters to write say, a cookbook which will promote a celebrity as the author, when all they have really contributed is a few hours in the studio for the cover shot

A ghost writer is someone who does the actual writing for you. You give them the ideas, and explain how you would like the story to proceed, and they make it take shape and come to life.

A ghost writer is slightly different from a co-writer in that in the second case, you do some of the actual writing yourself. In the former case, you just are the idea person, and all the writing is taken care of by the ghost writer.

The reason they are called ghost writers is because they often receive no credit for the finished product. They do get money, and quite a bit of it, since they did most of the work, but their name stays hidden away.

A ghost writer is a person who writes a book for someone but their name isn't used. The person for whom the book is written assumes authorship.
