Not only do they change by designer, they change by manufacturer. And this is not just women's clothing either. Men's clothes are the same thing.
For example. Dress shirts made by Van Heusen and by Stafford. I wear a 17 1/2 to an 18 neck size. 34 sleeve length. Stafford run small on me and I actually have to buy an 18 1/2 in their shirts while Van Huesen run large on me and can do with a 17 1/2.
The only standard in clothes at all are the grades of clothing. The three grades are Good, Better, Best. With the Good grade, you will find seam stitching to be very prominent. You can see even the holes used by the sewing machine to set the stitch. Good clothing are clothes generally sold at place like Marshall's.
Better grade clothing generally the construction is much better. Seams are less defined and you should see no sewing machine holes. Buttons are generally shanked to prevent falling off. You will find this grade of clothing at boutiques or shops like Dayton Hudson's, Boston Stores, and the like.
Best grade clothing are the caddy's of clothing. You will see well made clothing with no prominent seams and button and button holes are set and very tight. You would find these kinds of clothes at Macy's and any of the Federated Department Stores clothing.
All clothing, whether women's intimate wear or Men's suits are graded in this fashion

Yes, clothes sizes do vary from retailer to retailer. Also there is something known as 'vanity sizing', where they label clothes with smaller sizes than the measurements would indicate. This is in an attempt to make the buyer feel good about themselves, and ultimately purchase more items from that retailer. HTH : )
Here is a list of standard sizes:
Size 0 - 31-23-33
Size 2 - 32-24-34
Size 4 - 33-25-35
Size 6 - 34-26-36
Size 8 - 35-27-37 or 36-28-38
Size 10 - 37-29-39 or 38-30-40
Size 12 - 39-31-41 or 40-32-42
HTH : )

Don't worry about the size!!! Every manufacturer uses a different size chart, so they will fit different. A size 4 in Liz Claiborne or Ralph Lauren is a lot bigger that a size 4 from American Eagle. You shouldn't worry about the size number! If you really want to get freaked out, go to a vintage clothing store and try on something from the 50's. Something marked a size 12 from back then is really tiny. I even have some clothes from the 80's and they fit my friend's 10 year old! If you don't like the number on the size, cut the tag out! No one but you needs to know the number!

They vary. There is a group of women who are trying to force the industry into a standard.
Brand to brand, designer to designer, country to country, it all changes.
Banana Republic is the worst. They under size things so you'll be more likely to buy it. What woman wouldn't want to buy that size 6 pair of slacks she just fit into when she's normally an 8? Me, that's who. I know what they're up to! I actually heard a woman screaming at a saleswoman in the dressing room about it. She was as irked as I was.

No standard. Unless you only buy one kind of jeans and then it will still very on the style. Old Navy is the closest to real size and Target mossimo jeans are going to be a good standard size.NOT AE they run very big. A size 6 at AE should be like a size 8 any were eles. Tommy also runns big

well i'm pretty sure sizes differ depending on the brand, like if you buy one size of "angel" jeans and you get that same size in another brand they will be pretty much the same size but they will (more than likely) fit you different.
