okay..i know i'm gonna get some heat for this one...so preferably a response from a person with medical background is more appreciative.

tonight is my husband's birthday and i have limited myself to one glass of red wine every 3-4 weeks since i have been pregnant. What's the general rule to having 2-3 drinks at 31 weeks pregnant?

These answers are completely erroneous and alarmist. In order to produce a child with FAS, one must drink a ponderously abusive amount of alcohol. There is little evidence supporting the idea that light and occasional drinking will cause any harm to the fetus. The British Royal College of Obstetricians have an interesting and balanced statement out about alcohol and pregnancy outcome. Bear in mind, though that two UK units of alcohol are about equal to one standard sized American drink:

However, the doctors writing this statement do not recommend drinking more than one standard American drink in a sitting, so I would avoid doing so.

My mother is a GYN and I can tell yo uright now even the littlest bit of whine can cause FAS. My mother has had many patients who have drank whine while pregnant, some even only one glass and thier babies were born with FAS.

Another thing you should know is that is some states such as where I live it is against the law to drink while pregnant and at a certain amount of weeks it can be considered child endangerment and you can be arrested and put into some kind of home till you give birth and after a case worker will decide if you get to kee pyour baby or the baby goes into foster care.

You have your whole life to drink, I do not think 40 weeks is going to kill you , would you rather be safe or would you rather risk the health of your child and risk getting into trouble and losing your baby before you even get a chance to see it?

My mothers best friend was drinking whine once a month, just a glass but my mom had no idea and when she found out she flipped out on her, she set up an appointment for the next day to check on the baby and make sure everything was fine, this had went on for about 4 months and everything looked fine during the ultrasound but thier was no way of telling if the baby was going to be born with some kind of problem such as FAS so my moms friend had to go on worrying till she gave birth rather then being excited because she was afraid her child would not be healthy. If my mother would have reported her she would of been in a serious load of trouble and if it gets out my mother hid this my mom can get into a lot of trouble but it has been 5 years and so far nothing has happened.

I seriously suggest you go and talk to your GYN and tell her what you have been doing, I can tell you right now she is going to be very disapointed and lecture you and you will be lucky if she does not report you.

I don't have a medical background.......but I would just like to say that risking having a glass of wine every once in a while is pretty selfish, just to get a buzz, and give the baby an even BIGGER buzz!! I don't think it's smart at ANY time during pregnancy to have any amount of alcohol, no matter what anyone else would lead me to believe about certain amounts being ok. This is a tiny little person inside you getting tipsy too. Imagine being 3pnds and drinking 3 glasses of wine. I think you'd probably pass out long before the last drink. I just don't think it's smart or loving AT ALL!!!!!!!

Bella, I can't help you with a medical opinion, but one glass of red wine every few weeks will not seriously harm your child. Alcohol is not good for your child, but if drinking only a little will make you happier, it will probably be good for you. Don't worry too much and enjoy your pregnancy.

Let me put it this way. My wife had the occasional drink while she was pregnant and our daughter came out just fine. Alcohol abuse causes FAS not the occasional drink. Just don't go getting drunk or make regular habit and your child will be fine. 1 glass of wine every 3-4 weeks shouldn't be a big deal so long as it's a small glass and you pace yourself.

Is there any safe amount of alcohol to drink?
There is no known amount of alcohol that is safe to consume during pregnancy, but the more you drink, the more you raise your baby's chances of having problems.

Facts About Alcohol:
Alcohol is a teratogen. Teratogen is a substance known to be harmful to human development.

Alcohol crosses the placenta to your baby. When you drink alcohol, so does your baby. Therefore, alcohol can be harmful to your baby's development.

All drinks that contain alcohol can be harmful to your baby. There is no safe amount of alcohol to consume while you are pregnant. It is best to discuss any drinking patterns with your health care provider.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can result in a number of different physical, neurological and mental effects ranging in severity. These effects fall under the term “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)”, which encompasses all the problems that result from prenatal alcohol exposure. The most known of these affects is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE). Fetal Alcohol Effects can also be separated into two different categories; Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND) and Alcohol-Related Birth Defects (ARBD).

What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is one of the most common causes of mental retardation and the only one that is 100% preventable. The effects are irreversible and last a lifetime.

The effects of FAS include: mental retardation, malformations of the skeletal system and major organ systems (specifically the heart and brain), growth deficiencies, central nervous system problems, poor motor skills, mortality, and problems with learning, memory, social interaction, attention span, problem solving, speech and/or hearing.

There are also facial features that are characteristic of babies with FAS. These features include: small eyes, short or upturned nose, flat cheeks, and thin lips. These features fade as the child grows up, but the child is left with a lifetime of difficulties trying to cope with other effects.

(not a doctor but my husband is a nurse and I'm a mom whose made it a point to educate herself on all things involving my children/future childs health, being informed is the first step)

You can stop by not buying the wine in the first place. I know someone who has to drink at least two bottles of wine at night and get sloshed before she can get to sleep. because its not whiskey she does not think she is alcoholic, she still considers it to be social drinking.whenever you make a comment, she just smiles and drinks in the kitchen instead. i would be careful if i were you.

um instead of limiting yourself you should stop all together. i dont know if anyone told you this, but a shot glass full of anything could kill your baby, so what do you think 3 to 4 glasses is gonna do to it?
