Mink Oil is probably the best thing,although you can use silicone spray that waterproofs them also,they sell that in shoe stores.

dubbin, a natural oil protectant
scotchguard, mainly used on lounges to prevent staining

you shoud put some protection spray on them you can get the spray from a CVS or a WAL-MART exc.
