after Simon's brutal murder by the boys (who thot simon was the beast) ironically the "dead body on the hill" --the beast--parachutist guy-- appears and drifts away into the sea. WHAT is the signifcance of this happening at the same moment simon died. How is the timing ot this both ironic and tragic??

It's ironic because they have, by killing Simon, dispelled the beast from their midst. It's tragic because Simon was the measure of their civility. With his loss goes the one who sees them for what they are and have become.

The boys on this island represented a microcosmic version of what was actually happening in the world. (the war, and how adults reacted and behaved to it)

They had come across a dead parachutist and had believed it to be a "beast". The beast represents the evil residing within everyone. The Beast is used as a scapegoat by the boys to avoid self-knowledge.

You have to remember that World War II is still raging as the boys are stuck on the island. The parachutist represented the ongoing war, and the killing of simon represented the brutuality of war.
