i had an imaginary friend for a short while as a child. i don't remember when it started or when it ended, and since it didn't last long, i don't think it was harmful. i think you have to consider how involved the child gets in this fantasy. if it starts taking him away from other activities, then there may be reason for concern.

I have four little girls all of them have imaginary friends of some sort. I think it is very beneficial because they know that they always have someone to share with. No matter how close parent and child are, kids want to talk and play with someone who understands everything they come up with...imaginary friends never say "I'm on the phone" and they never fail to be suitably delighted or empathetic to their cause...don't you wish you had one of those?

I had an imaginary friend when I was younger. Also, you should read this book called "If you could see me now" by Cecilia Ahren. It's fictional but it gives you a different outlook on imaginary friends.

my oldest daughter had an imaginary friend. we're mid-western & her "friend" had a new york accent! we all found this so cute & funny that she soon got jealous of her "friend" & she "moved away"! haha! it's ok as long as the character doesn't become bigger to the child than the real people. it may even be benaficial to a lonely child & warn a parent that she/he needs more socialization.

My daughter had one when she was 4 years old and named her Miss Aster. She was around until she was 5 1/2 years old. One day I noticed she wasn`t talking about her any longer. This was about the time she started school. I do not think there is anything wrong with it unless it gets obsessive where it is happening all the time.

I think they should because they don't have any friends yet so the imagine. Imagineing is very good for a child, because they could be creative. The child might be lonely, it'll wear off when the get older.
