I think the best thing for you to do is audtion a song not from the play itself. Those were tips given to me by alot of my drama friends when I decided to audition for a play outside of school. Though if they request you audtion a piece from the play then do so.
In my opinion though, if they ask you not to don't. That way the directors only get a sense of your vocal range and how it sounds and not how it sounds for a particular character. Also if you audition a piece from the show itself they may think you are desperate for that part and might not put you in it.

Guys and Dolls is a great musical comedy based on the stories written by Damon Runyon. The whole show is about a bet between a guy named Sky Masterson and his pal Nathan Detroit. Nathan has been engaged to a Doll named Adelaide, who sings and dances at a nigh club called the Hot Box. She sings a couple of songs in the show and has a chorus line of girls behind her. "I Love You A Bushel and a Peck" Is the most famous one, but she is a character with who needs to have a very New York accent. The only other female lead is named Sarah and she runs a Broadway mission looking to convert all the sinners of New York into good Christians. She has to be straight laced and proper at first. She is the object of the bet between Sky and Nathan. Sky says he will get a date with the doll of Nathan's choosing and he picks Sarah. So, the show turns on the pursuit of a date. It's a lot of fun to perform and a lot of fun to watch. The music is great and the story is funny, so it is a very fun show to be part of. To do this show, you need to have a lot of boys. There are two female leads, but there could be lots of girls in the chorus, too. I've seen this show with a cast of 150 people. No matter how you do it, it's a winner and loads of fun. I wish you best of luck in your audition and I hope you enjoy doing the show as much as I did. Break a Leg! Rob R

unfortunatly you are at bad odds already being in one of the younger classes....the leads will most likely go to an 8th grader...at least that is how most middle school directors work... you may still have a chance if you blow thier minds away...even though i am telling you the odds are against you still try out because it will make you look good when you are in 8th grade and there is a musical they will look back and think oh yea i remember her she tried out for the last musical and even though she didnt get a huge part she gave it her all....actually even with a small part you can stand out more than the main characters....in the original annie in the song sandy there is this girl that sings " rover... why not think it over" and no one know s her name but everyone walks away thinking wow that girl was amazing....so remember...
"there are no small parts just small actors"
and always give it your all no matter what part you get

Practice but make sure to give your voice a rest before. Push the sound from your diaphram and don't sing in your throat, use the front of your face (or mask) to get the resonance of the sound. Have fun with it. Don't exagerate the cold but play with it.

Wow, that's so cool! That was the play my school put on last year.
The girl who played Adalaide danced fantastically, and had a very good "aux-scent". She was totally into character, and belted every song spectacularly. If I were you, I would work on getting the right tone for Adalaide, and work on projecting my voice.

Unless you are specifically requested to audition with a song from the show, I wouldn't use Adelaide's lament to audition for this show. If you were, give her all the personality that you can.

I'd imitate the "black version" of guys and dolls Adelaide.
She does a great scream when "she is getting too old", it's hilarious.

I would say practice, practice, practice!! also, do some stretching exercises just before you go in so you will remain very relaxed. Good luck!!
