It's our sons and daughters that get killed on someones say so with less than fifty percent of the PEOPLES vote to get them in power!
I think that seperate votes should be used on issues like going to war with another country.

In the U.K. it should be a majority of all parties in both houses of parliament that should make the decision, and not just the government. The ordinary citizens do not always have all the required information due to secrecy laws.

For Marcia - the quote is from the Gettysburg Address by A. Lincoln, and concludes as follows:

and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

So the question was right.

Now, the fact is, we are a representative democracy, and under the constitution, only congress (acting on behalf of the people) can declare war.

But what about "undeclared" wars (e.g., Vietnam, Korea, etc.). Congress can refuse to fund the laws.

Now, think about it. If we needed a national referendum to engage in war, it would be completely unworkable.

So the answer: elect responsible representatives who will protect the sons and daughters they put in harms way.

article 1 sect 8 us constitution says congress has the power to go to war. it also has an obligation to provide for common defense and general welfare . sometimes the people dont know all the reasons to go to war,if all did so would the enemy of our country and use it against us.so our only way to stop our leaders would vote them out of office. like what just happend a few days ago

Its, OF, BY, and For the people. Yes we elect our leaders and they vote for us. When it goes oh so wrong as it has been this last 6 years, we change the balance of power in our government and that we did, now the only thing is wait and see if anything comes out positive for it.

First, lets not forget who fights in a war; Soldiers...they enlist!

Second, it's frigging scary stuff, that's probably why their parents aren't holding their hands.

Third, it's government's that run a country, not us. So yes it's their right to make choices.

Forth, it's your right to vote, but that's all...end of story!

The rest is just conspiracy theory and media drama queens on one-sided news reels.

Sometimes there isn't time to organize an election about it. ..as in Pearl Harbor. However, I believe anyone who takes our country into war based on lies, for the purpose of profiteering, should be prosecuted.

I agree... I think now that we have elected leaders.. of both parties that we don't really trust.. we should have separate votes on very serious matters. Such as are we going to let Bush kill our kids.... we have lost 3000 already... and no one says anything.

There doesn't seem to be anyway to stop the republicans thirst for war, so they should be allowed to leave and make this nation a better place (by not coming back)..
