I am so very in disagreement with this. I'm pregnant with my third child. Children do not need to be trained to sleep. Most infants and toddlers do not sleep through the night as an adult does. They operate on a totally different sleep cycle. This is natural and normal!! As they grow and mature their sleep cycle will change and they will beging to sleep for longer stretches of time. Sleep training follows the idea that you can FORCE a child to change their cycle. Why? Why would you want to? Our Western culture loves to go against nature. Especially when it comes to parenting. We go against what is best for the child in favor of what is more convenient for the parent! This is wrong!
I never let my children cry it out. In fact, we had a family bed. They slept with us until they were about 2. This helped their sleep cycle. But I never ever made them cry it out. How cruel is that? We warned by everyone that if we let our kids sleep with us we'd never get them into their own beds. Between the ages of 2 & 3 we transitioned them over to their own beds and they made the transition with no problems. They both sleep in their own beds through the night.
My opinion is that if a person cannot allow a baby to develop naturally then they shouldn't have one. If you are going to alter the environment to fit your needs rather than the infant's needs then you shouldn't be a parent.

Its something that is very ridiculous. Its when a parent try to put a child on a schedule, which never work in my opinion. I have a 15 month old and I never tried to put him on any routine because i thought it was just crazy. He started sleeping through the night on his on, around 8 weeks. After that he went through his own routine off and on. After around 3 months old he started sleeping through the night all together. He still sleeps with us, I am going to wait until he turns two to let him sleep in his own room. I never did believe in routines. They are insane, and makes a child feels like they are in the army. Just let them be!!

Theres is a train of thought out there that believes you need to teach your child to sleep, they follow practices like ''crying it out'' (CIO), and strict routines.
I personally disagree you don't need to teach your child to sleep reguarly, instead you have to learn how to read your child's unique tires signals and then create a sleep routine that fits their needs.
THE NO CRY SLEEP SOLUTION by Elizabeth Pantley, is an excellent source if you are having sleep issues with your little one

it's a method used by parents to have their babies sleep through the night, often using "crying it out". It's highly controversial, I could never do it, I knew when I became a parent that I needed to be a parent night and day!
