I agree with Kimberly.
Our 1st graders also have a math problems with charts and graphs and 4 to 5 questions all about the graph on their tests. They begin 13-4=9, so I would say that is not just simple adding/subtraction. Fact families, telling time, counting money and making predictions and estimations. Coloring?! Who has time for that anymore?!
Yes, tests! And our schools use Spaulding which teaches all the sounds so the spelling test has dictation of sounds, sentences and spelling words. 15 spelling words+ 5 sentences and 5 different phonemes.
They also cut and paste which is important for eye hand coordination.

In first grade students learn how to write sentences and to spell small words. In our school they have 30 minutes of Spanish, art, keyboarding, and P.E. everyday. They spend a lot of time with words such as learning vowels. At our school they also start Accelerated Reader, which is a reading program where students are given a reading level according to their reading ability, then they read books in their reading level and take tests over them. They have to read 2 books per week. They begin small math problems like 1+1=2, 1+2=3, ect. At the end of the year they do higher thinking problems like subtracting. At our school they do a project either about the book they read for class or something for science. 1st grade is where students really begin the learning that we do in high school. Hope it helped!

My sister is in 1st grade this year, so I should be able to answer this question confidently.
Basic math: addition, subtraction
Reading: simple words, ball, fall, no, yes, etc. . .
Drawing: self explanatory
Spelling: simple 3 to 4 letter words
There you have it!

My little brother was in first grade last year. They basically do addition, subtraction, and spelling simple words like "ball". I think they learn a little about putting words together to write sentences.
