The way that works for me, is to lay down however it is you usually sleep, close your eyes and concentrate on making sure every muscle in your body is relaxed. Once they are just start imagining a story or yourself doing whatever it is you like to do, as if you were watching a movie in your head and before you know it, you'll wake up the next morning.
It works for me hope it works for you.
P.S. the reading the book answer works too, UNLESS you happen to like the book, then you will end up staying up later than normal!!!!!

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Count sheep! haha Just kidding. I normally do an activity to get my tired. People say it's not good to exercise before going to sleep; however, I find this to be untrue. I workout every night before I fall asleep and after my nightly run, I collapse on my bed and is snoozing by the count of 1.2.3! However, everyone is diffferent. If exerciseing isn't your thing, maybe doing some reading. I highly enjoy reading but when reading at the end of the day it starts to make my eyelids drop fast! If these don't work, I don't know what else to tell yu. You ask a very general topic and hard one to asnwer! hahaha Hope I help! Ciao! =]

the beer answer would work but it might take a few hours to pass out.
Really you should prepare yourself before going to bed.
Don't eat anything two hours prior - def don't take caffeine, try a herbal tea.
Don't get overstimulated either by watching exciting tv or doing anything that sharpens your mind - wind down slowly. If you have kids you'll know what I'm talking about.

Prepare to go to sleep. drink decaffeinated tea make sure your in comfortable night clothes. You also might want to make the temperature colder. Also thirty minutes before bed turn off the t.v and just relax thinking about the highlight of your day during this time can also lead to wonderful dreams. Nighty Night don't let the bed bugs bite

Read a book. (Not because it's boring but because eventually your eyes will get tired and you should be able to fall asleep a little easier).
Hope I've helped :)

I often have the same problem - especially when the mind is "traveling" - I use a "nite time sleep aid" (Equate from Walmart)

I like to make my pillows and covers just right. Have everything cozy, then close my eyes and build my dream house in my head. I usually never get more than one room done.........ZZZZZ
