I think it's a particular American prejudice. People in the UK sometimes marry their cousins. It has never been seen as a problem here.

Personally I was surprised to see the furore among the American contingent!

Here's a link to an American article which confirms that there are no real genetic grounds for forbidding cousins to marry.

Well, if you are asking a serious question (and I doubt you are), it has nothing to do with love or lack of love, or whether or not it's sick because you are related.... it has all to do with geneology. When you are first or second cousins, you're drinking from the same gene pool.... when these genes are duplicated in an unborn child, this can cause birth defects.... bad birth defects.

I know way back in the days when there were less humans around and our gene pool wasn't quite as shallow, cousins would wed, because it wasn't an issue back then. I think it's once you get to third cousins or greater, there is less probability for birth defects in children, so it is okay. I think that it's soley based upon the possible outcome of children born to the kissing cousins.

I would never marry any of my cousins..... my mom's adopted, so I'm not even biologically related to these folks.... but they are still my cousins and I was taught that is a SICK, FREAKISH thing to do.

Sorry that Momma ruined the wedding. They can marry and adopt still if they want....

Do I take it that in the usa it is not legal for cousins to marry? That seems to be the message from all the "that's sick", birth defects bla bla bla brigade!"
In the United Kingdom it is perfectly legal to marry lst cousins and there are no two headed banjo players walking the streets here!

It's just socially unaccepted. Like gay marriage. Society is prejudiced against all "weird" customs like marrying a relative or marrying a person of the same sex, etc.

People are prejudiced against marrying cousins because the blood-line is so close. It's incestuous, and last time I checked incest was illegial in the U.S. (too many genetic problems).

If you marry your cousin and then have sex it can cause some really strange birth defects. Plus it is awkward and can create really nasty family tensions.
