MSN, AOL, Xfire or ICQ
Trillian is a mixture of MSN, ICQ, AIM and AOL and has IRC access too.

ICQ is rather good.
Or if you don't like the messenge rprograms that are overloaded with useless features and ads, try Gaim or Miranda or Trillian; or the Meebo online service.
