When people attempt to hug me, i either pull away or stiffen up. My dad left my family when i hwas 7, maybe that had something to do with it? Being this way has ruined many friendships and relationships. Any advice on how to overcome?

Just relax let your body just loosen up.
Or just think this: the people I'm hugging are family and loved ones, there's no need to hate hugs. It's probally because your dad left. That's very explainable because fissical emoiten can relate to some side effects. And plus hugs mean friendship and love so good luck
hoped I helped=]

One should not use ones childhood as an excuse for ones shortcomings. There are a lot more people than you think who don't like to be hugged. To overcome this dislike of physical closeness, you have to decide whether or not it is OK for you to allow someone into your personal space. Start slowly with those closest to you and once you have genuinely experienced how comforting hugs can be you'll find yourself initiating them. At some point in your life you have simply decided that you don't like people getting that close to you and you've chosen not to like hugs, but I assure you that they are very comforting.

I've worked at schools for twenty two years and there is nothing so sweet as a little child hugging you. If children love you they really love you. They don't care what color you are , or if you are rich or poor. I had a little boy once that when I kissed his cheek he would try to rub it off. I told him that kisses don't rub off they only rub in and they fill your heart with love. So from then on we had to kiss each others cheek and rub it in. Then we'd touch our hearts to see if they were filling up. So I know this is childish for an adult, but when someone hugs you just kinda hug them back and one day you will not hate it so bad and your heart will be filling up with love.

I hate them too! I thought I was weird! The only one that can hug me is my bf. That is when I started to overcome it. I guess I felt I could not trust anyone. But then when me and my bf started dating, I could give and get hugs without feeling weird. I hope you get over it someday because I know it sucks and it always makes an akward moment.

Some people just don't like physical contact...it's like an invasion of their space. To overcome it...practice. Try being the one to give hugs first...then you may become more comfortable with it

Does that not depend on WHO wants to hug you?

You don't trust people and you don't like to have your personal space invaded. I was like that too, but naturally overcame it as I got older. Best wishes.
