Make fun of us. "Monk" pointsw out how perspicuous our disorder is. Though not fully accepted by the public as a disability, OCD's are very real to us. My mother called me up bawling and begging forgiveness after realization. I would start with ridiculing us for the seemingly nonsensical and irrational reactions we have to seemingly rational situations. I would then pound into the audience these perceptions are quite real to some of us. You will likely gain a heightened interest by some simply because of the absurdity of the disorder and gain some sympethizers with some very real stories. Before you mimnimize this disorder....I have fully come to terms with the fact my OCD's will ultimately contribute to the demise of my life and everything I have ever loved. Beliefs or not, they will end me.

Get the participants involved in the learning. After presenting some of the characteristics and so on, have the participants do a role play demonstrating what they think OCD might look like.

Have each participant give a characteristic present in themselves that could constitute OCD if taken to excess (we all have a little OCD!!).

Divide the participants into groups and have each group demonstrate one characteristic of OCD to the large group.

Do a jigsaw type activity whereby groups read different journal articles or chapters of a textbook (you give them the copies) on OCD and each group reports back to the large group giving the important points of their article.

Prepare case studies and have the participants divide into groups and come up with a support plan for the individuals described in their case studies. Groups report back to the large group.

I hope these thoughts help. Good luck with it.

When you walk up count your steps, go back and do it over and over a few times or do another OCD action.Demonstrate OCD to your group.

I developed a little OCD after finding someone where they should not have been. Now I have to check locks over and over.

*sigh* OCD doesn't have anything to do with "special education". It's something that anyone can have.

Just make sure that you tell your classmates, that they're just like normal people. Okay?
