First, the quibbling part: Technically, snakes are venomous, not poisonous. An easy way to remember: Something is poisonous when the risk is from you biting it, and venomous when the risk is from it biting you. Also, in the long term, wouldn't your son learn more if he learned how to do his own research, rather than having you do it for him?
That said, most species of snakes are non-venomous. (Australia is the exception; they have more venomous species than harmless ones) So there's a wide range to choose from.
In North America, there are two families of venomous snakes -- pit vipers (including rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths) and elapids (coral snakes). So, he can do his report on any three North American snakes other than members of those two families, and he's home clear. If you happen to live in North America, I'd suggest that he do his report on three species found in your local area. Or, pick three that are interesting in some way, such as the garter snakes which are livebearers rather than egglayers (and in fact have been found to have a primitive placental structure), the kingsnakes which eat venomous snakes (!), and the corn snakes which have become a mainstay of the pet trade.
Wikipedia, though not an authoritative source, is a good first stop for finding information. A good encyclopedia (yeah, the kind on dead trees) -- available at your public library if you don't own one -- is another good resource to get you started. And, of course, Google is your friend.

There are only three (Native)poisonous snakes in North America. They are Copperhead, Coral Snake and various sub-species of the Rattlesnake.
Make sure of the question since they are asking for THREE snakes...are they asking for poisonous or non-poisonous?
Non-poisonous snakes include...rat snake, blue racer, king snake, green snake, ring neck snake and others.
Good Luck

Garter snake - very common. Milk snake - again, very common. And a black snake. I live in the Northeast (New York State) and these snakes are all over out here, and none are poisonous (the ones I mentioned that is!).

you can google just about anything. If you're looking for something unique to report on, I would do some very colorful non-poisonous snakes. The corn snake (also known as the king snake) comes in a variety of colors: http://www.kingsnake.com/rockymountain/RMHPages/RMHnewpage11.htm
the tree boas are also high color:

the burmese python is also a fun one to report on, and the albino ones are pretty:

have fun! make sure to inculde pictures of the snakes you're reporting on, the teachers love colorful pictures.

Bull snakes, garter snakes, milk snakes. Bull snakes are my favorites. They're often mistaken for rattlesnakes because of their coloring. They are very effective "mousers".
