The best has to be Jimi Hendrix, on account of what the man could do with a guitar. So heaps of people out there don't like the music. That's got nothing to do with talent. That's got to do with taste. Hendrix was the best because he could do stuff no one else ever could or ever will be able to do with a guitar.
Sond has to be Duane Allman. Man, somebody give the guy some credit, please. He was an extremely innovative guitarist at the forefront of the talented guitarists of his time. He was admired by his peers for the 'new' sound and style he was bringing to the instrument. He was, like hendix, a man who could do stuff others couldn't. And he produced a great sound. Like Hendrix he also died way too young.
I'll mention another few names who run in somewhere behind these two. Chet Atkins, Carlos Santana, Slash, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Brian May, Peter Green, The Edge, ah the list goes on. But those two are a runnaway first and second for mine.

Jimmi Page, Peter Frampton, Lindsay Buckingham, Eric Clapton, are some very popular ones I like. But
I personally think that Pink Floyd guitarist, David Gilmour is the best guitar player ever.
