Just to clarify: the Eternal Teenager is right. There are three versions of this tool, so it would have been helpful if you had given approximate measurements. The one you have in mind is a scythe, and it was used to mow hay until fairly recent times. A smaller version with a short handle and 12" blade is a sickle, used for smaller jobs. I'm not sure what the third one is called; it has a 3' long handle and a 6-8" long serrated blade at the bottom, good for cutting stems at ground level.

The Grim Reaper has a scythe. It is a long 2 handed implement .A sickle is small one hand held implement.
