Because we are really close to our star, the sun. The light from it drowns out the other lights from stars. The same way a very small light in a room is drowned out by turning on a much larger one. At night, we are completely turned away from it, so we can now see other lower light sources.

you won't be able to verify the stars from a spacecraft taking pictures of the earth because of the fact the stars are a lot farther from the earth than the spacecraft is, i.e., the starts are at the back of you. in case you turn the digital camera around to the choice edge of the area craft you will see a lot of stars. Heck, once you're fortunate you additionally can see some Martians!

If you mean that the sky should be bright (not dark) all the time, this is known as Olber's paradox. The reason is that the light from stars take a certain amount of time to get to Earth; if their light arrived here instantaneously than we'd have a bright sky even when facing away from the SUn.

beacuase of the effect of the atmosphere. It reflects components of the sun's light, producing the generally blue colour of the sky and washing out most things beyond. Very bright objects can be seen (moon, venus, etc).

Of course, if you live on the west coast of canada like me, the reason you can't see the sky is because of all the blasted clouds and rain.

The light from the sun is spread out through the earth's atmophere and blue is the visible color we can see.
If there was no atmosphere here on earth, you could see the stars.
When they send the shuttle up, they can see stars even though the sun is shining, but it has to be at their back.
At least, that is what I understand.
