Vitamins. I had this condition for a while, and the top layer would just peel right off and they'd crack and split. My daily multivitamin cured it. You need to make sure you're getting enough leafy green vegetables and getting enough calcium, vitamin e, zinc and vitamin d. Biotin is essential to healthy hair, nails and skin as is pantothenic acid (B5), copper and folic acid. Many vitamin companies make a "Hair, Nails & Skin" blend that can be added to your daily meals.
Try to avoid chemicals on your nails. Remember that nails are porous, and what you put on them can be absorbed directly into the highly vascular nail beds.
You can also try buffing your nails. I know you're thinking it will make them thinner. But it eliminates the ridges (I have ridged nails .. which renders them prone to splitting anyway) gives them better surface strength and helps prevent splitting. They're stronger if they have a smooth stable surface. Just don't over-buff. If you have a three-sided buffer - three or four seconds is plenty on the rough surface. 5-10 seconds on the medium fabric surface and as long as you like on the shiny surface.
Keeping them short is a good way to keep them neat.
I used to get my nails 'done' and the woman would oil them with macadamia oil to soften and strengthn them. You could try avocado oil if that's easier to find.

Many people recommend nail polish and nail hardeners - they only treat the symptoms and not the underlying cause.

nutri nail is the best! and plus it doesn't cost so much.

if you want to splurge, try sally hansen's nail hardener kit. it has essential mineral oils and polish. it's what my mom uses, and she says it is great!

They say vitamins and gelatin. You could eat Jello or buy the capsules. It also makes your hair shiny.
