You must either have been watching comedies, romantic films or butch actions films only. Try watching not just the best-seller anymore.
It used to be the case in pretty much all fims, but nowadays there are lots of films with tough & victorious women who can even beat up the men. Lots of them (this sentence has two meanings, both apply).
The job of the actress in the movie is still to look beautiful (or else viewership ratings will be affected) all the time, but films nowadays show love interest from both male and female points of view.
We are heading in the right direction and are aleady half way there, unless you prefer the above in which case some films will still make you happy.
But remember that though the woman in often the person in the most danger, she generally either wins in the end, or at least puts up a valiant fight. The same can't be said for the armies and armies of male baddies (eg ninjas) - think Kill Bill, Charlies Angels, Avengers, Murder She Wrote or Xena - I love these films/shows.
Remember also that the market is supplied for stereotypes and demographics - movie makers think that children want to watch cartoons, pensioners quiz shows, men action films and women emotional stuff. This explains a lot.

You must have been watching old movies! In the average movie that was made up to the 1970`s the job of the actress in the movie was to look beautiful all the time be the love interest for the actor and to make the actor look good. He was the macho guy who rescued the poor little woman, who fainted from the heat in the jungle( but then who wouldn`t faint wearing a pound of make-up on her face, and wearing a wig, false eyelashes, a rigid up-lift bra, tight clothes and high-heels?) Oh ! for the days of glamour!!

Men and women aren't equal - they are most definitely different, and different means not equal.
I'm not suggesting that men can't do most of the things that women do, and vice versa - but there are somethings that women do better, and some things that men do better.
One of the things that men do better is fulfilling the role of 'protector' - someone who will take care of there partner and protect them from physical harm - mainly because on AVERAGE men and taller, wider and stronger than the AVERAGE woman which is why in the movies women tend to play the less dominant (or weak as you call it) roles.

it's ur view my pal, that" women are shown weak".actually the things shown in movies(like women crying and shouting out of fear ) represents their sensitivity, and sensitivity is a power don't assume it as a weakness. This is the universal truth that women are emotionally stronger than men and men are physically stronger than women,so while making a movie, makers can't deny this truth.

What about GI Jane and Enough. Demi Moore and Jennifer Lopez kicked some butt in those movies. Of Course, they took alot of abuse in them first, but then came back to win! Yeah! "Protector", whatever, then why does my boyfriend whine like a two year old when he gets a sniffle? Does he think I am going to play the role of "Florence Nightingale"?
