Why are cardinal birds considered Christmasy? They appear everywhere during Christmas -- ornaments, pillows, whatever -- but why are they connected with Christmastime?

Because they are red. I don't quite think the bluebird of Christmas would work as well.

Red and green are considered the colors of Christmas. Now that would be a good question.

I think cardinals return from migration in the winter time, therefore they are seen first of the year during the Christmas season. Birds tell us the seasons change and the winter ones say the holidays will soon be here, so that's one more sign to start getting ready for the holiday (Christmas that is).
