I don't tend to say sorry unless I knew the person myself. I say "I heard of your loss, if you need anything, let me know"

" I'm very sorry to hear about ..... " and leave it at that. If they feel the need, they will talk about it. If not, then they will change the subject. But acknowledging the loss is almost always appreciated.

Unless you killed them, do not say sorry, because you didn't do anything. Either than that, just ask them to point you to the food.
