I have a Britax First Clas Si which I bought from Halfords. It can be used backwards facing from birth & then forward facing from 9 months to 4years. I am very happy with it and it fits well in both our cars. I think we paid about £80 for it but it was in the sale so I don't know how much they are new.
We also have another Britax one thats suitable from 9 months but then converts to a booster seat for 4years to 11 years. I can't remember it's name but it is the predecessor to the Britax Evolva. It is ok for short journeys but not so good for long ones cos if my son falls asleep he sort of flops to the side as the sides of the seat aren't as deep. The Evolva looks much better though from what I have seen and I would recommend it as they have to have some sort of seat till they are 11 so you may as well buy one that will last. I would also say buy the best you can afford as you can't put a price on a childs safety.

Fisher Price Safe Voyage Car Seat is made by Britax(top of the line car seat manufacturer) and will only cost you about $200.00 dollars. I think it can fit a child between 5 and 55 pounds. This car seat will probably last you a long time. You will not have to keep buying car seats with this one like you would with the less expensive ones.

We bought my sister in laws car seats from Target in Australia for around $180. As long as the car seat has a tick of approval by Australian Standards then it should be safe !

The safest car seat is the one that fits your vehicle, fits your child and that you will use correctly EVERY time you get into the car. Good luck.

Check out Argos. Their car seats are most reasonably priced around.

Just brought this one for my daughter http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3754494/Trail/C%24cip%3D42358.Toys%2Band%2Bbaby%3EC%24cip%3D42368.Baby%2Band%2Bnursery%2Bequipment%3EC%24cip%3D42373.Baby%2Band%2Btoddler%2Bcar%2Bseats.htm

Good luck.
