I dont know about it being the "the most picturesque of waterside towns on the Island", but is is nice. While there check out Stony Brook right next store. Danfords is a nice "classy" place to dine while Tara's (by the tracks)is a good place to get burgers and beer. The play house puts on a great version of the Christmas carol around the holidays. Any questions drop me line, i grew up there.

Port Jeff is a nice place to visit by boat. It is on Long Island.
