Boric acid does the trick. And it's cheap, so that's a bonus. It works because it sticks to the cockroach's legs, which are jagged and attract all kinds of stuff. Then they lick it off and die fairly quickly.
Be careful if you have kids or animals. Only put it out in places that you KNOW they can't get to it, which is pretty difficult. We remodeled my kitchen and there was some boric acid behind a cabinet. My little pup ingested some of it and covered two rooms in puke while I was asleep that night. I spent several hundred dollars having all kinds of tests done to have her liver enzymes checked and other things that the acid destroys. It was a huge fiasco, and she was fine in the end, but it could have turned out much differently.
The other thing: get rid of all the cardboard. Cockroaches love the glue inside cardboard boxes, and glue inside other things too. Take your trash out every day. Check all the areas where they tend to concentrate and find out exactly what is feeding them. If you remove their food, they will usually leave in search of other food.

Yick! Move out!!!
I've heard that you can use a mixture of boric acid, and vaseline. Boric acid is available at the drug store, mix the power about 1/2 and 1/2 with the vaseline. Put a small dab on a piece of cardboard and put where the bugs are. I'm guessing you will have to put it everywere. If no results, call an exterminator.

When my husband and I lived in an large apartment building we had roaches. My husband put Boric acid along the perimeters of all the rooms. He was able to carefully pull the baseboards out just a little and poured it behind them. It worked like a charm! We were the only apartment in the entire building roach free.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects.
You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk
