The smell of gasoline is the No. 1 clue. You have a fuel leak somewhere toward the front of the car. With the engine running, and the smell of gasoline strong, open the hood, look all over the engine for leaking fuel. Look underneath the car for fuel dripping on the ground. Look on the left side front to rear, following the fuel line from engine to fuel tank. Look in the area of the fuel pump underneath the rear of the car near and all around the gas tank. Remove the engine cover and look all around the fuel injectors, and the pressure regulators. Look for any liquid fuel around rubber fuel line connections. When the fuel leak is located and repaired, the spark plugs will need to be cleaned of black carbon. When the excess fuel consumption is normalized, the Oxygen Sensor will again be able to adjust the fuel mixture, and in a short time the engine should smooth out the wild osillation of the tachometer and unstable RPM indication. After a couple tanks of gasoline, (500 miles) you might be wise to replace the (O2) contaminated Oxygen Sensor.

yes, rule out the fuel leak first. but the rich running condition could possibly be the pressure regulator stuck open. when this happens the car will run rich and get bad gas mileage. check with fuel pressure guage. don't have the spec in front of me but some where between 35 - 50. when the regulator is bad it will show full pump pressure at about 90 - 100 psi. good luck.

burnt black spark plugs and a sudden decline in fuel millage, says overly rich fuel mixture.
a petrol smell on the strong side, says get it to an authorizedBMW service center..soon
You don't need an engine fire. spark plugs replaced with in two weeks apart, and burnt black, are an overly rich fuel mixture, or an engine problem leaking oil into the combustion chambers.

Maybe you have a vaccum leak somewhere - on top of the fuel leak and a whole bunch of electrical issues.
The other possibility is a cracked head - junk the car if that is the case.
