The concensus seems to be I should have asked, but since I like all types of potatoes, with the exception of mash, I thought I would get something I like. It never it occurred to me they would serve up mash, I thought you only got that with school dinners, its never happened to me in a restaurant before.

It is generalized so that they can change the way they prepare the potatoes. This could be due to seasonal changes or maybe has to do with what they are currently carrying. And the mood of the Chef probably changes, one day he wants to do it one way and then the next day he wants to do it another way. And it has to also do with what the main entree is.

New potatoes if it's a restaurant that does mostly seafood, but then I wouldn't be there because I hate fish in all its forms, with the exception of tuna.
Jacket potatoes if the prices are incredibly cheap.
Potato wedges if the menu is mostly burgers or the like.
And a whole mixture if it's a carvery, although typically carveries are served with mash or roasties!

If it was the type of restaurant that said that on the menu, it would probably be chips, jacket or a potatoe of the day, which would change daily.

Personally I would assume the lack of choice would indicate boiled potatoes & I would not be amused (I love my spuds but boiled are at the bottom of the list - yawn, boring !!!!)
I would question the waiter/waitress extensively & probably beg/plead/bribe them for any other type - if worst case scenario occurred ie boiled potatoes arrived despite my cajoling then I'd cover them in butter & mash them myself ....... I'm not proud !!!!!

I would presume I'm going to get some kind of potato. If I didn't like some kinds of potato's I would ask beforehand if there were choices available.

Well if they didn't specify and I didn't ask I expect I would get fried potatoes. I like everykind of potato so it wouldn't matter.
