The dollar store is always useful... But if your looking to spend a little more go to Clairs or Ardens and get some jewlery. Heck, go to Wal-Mart and splurge on lip gloss and other cute things:P That was all I wanted for Christmas when I was that age...but maybe times have changed... $50 dollars slip between 10 people is $5 each so I guess Wal Mart is your best bet:P

Disposable camera with picture frame (go to the dollar store)
Look in the bins at Walmart and see if their is a CD movie in there that they may like (between $5 and $7)
socks
winter scarfs (wait for the l/2 price sale at Kohl's)
Lots of pins go on sale for the ladies at this time of year
Jewel close to xmas puts their colognes and perfumes on l/2 price sale
Keep an eye in the paper for Michael's ads (they have up to 50% coupons on one non-sale items) They have baskets, sketch books, paints, yarn, flowers, etc.
If they are drinking age, a nice bottle of wine does not have to be expensive

My best recomendation is to buy them something extremely unique and maybe a little wierd/silly.
For example...
One of our best friends (who's got a lot of cash, and we have very very little) birthday is this week. We (My husband and I) sent him (he's about a 5 hour flight away) an original Cobra G.I. Joe that we found at a churchsale, because he talks a lot about how he used to watch G.I. Joe and transformers and shows like that when he was a kid.
Another example might be...
A friend who really loves ikea-like style could be given a set of throw pillows... with like red and blue stripes or something (very nordic/viking like simplicity).
Good Luck, and have some fun with it!

OK, I won't suggest the home made calender then.
What about putting the money towards a tree - your local park or school may have such a scheme. It is a present for life.

Go to a dollar store or walmart and they get some stockings and fill them with candy. The stockings I gave out last year were decorated enough and you can always find some inexpensive christmas cards to give with them.
