how long has poverty been a problem in Ethiopia?

Poverty came to Ethiopia after a military junta took over by killing the king Hilesilase the first. The military junta changed the country from market based capitalist system to Russian Communism.....which devastated the country for 20 years.
Now things are looking to go well after American companies found oil in the country. It may take only few years from now on for the country to stand on.....if dick Chaney's oil companies show some sympathy too.
cheers

First of all ; How do you define povery? If you would live in a community of native indians say around the time Christ was born. You would not have all these modernities but you would survive and live in a differen way or not survive and die.
People in Ethiopia are not all poor, and the stereotype images are not correct, however there is staggering poverty and starvation in a lot places especially among displaced people living near cities.Apart from lack of basics in certain areas in the country people seem to live quite happily, and they are not so full of preconceived ideas as 'civilized'people. In the olden days the degradation of the natural landscape must have been less and also the recent changes in microclimatatological circumstances but this is hard to measure. One thing is for certain soil degradation and drought, deforestation are a huge problem especially in the regions towards Sudan. Some UN experts I talked to say no one will be able to live there in the future.
People suffer a lot from non-poverty issues such as war and oppression by their own government, if you read ancient manuscripts poverty and plagues, war and oppression have been around for ages.It is simply nothing new.
