This is what I do... I never stuff the turkey raw. That's gross. I prepare the stuffing like normal while the turkey is cooking. I let the bird cook halfway through and then I take it out and stuff it with the hot stuffing. Someone above mentioned another good idea of cooking the stuffing early and then putting it in the bird while cold. I never tried it that way but it couldn't hurt. But I never cook a turkey empty. First I stuff it with garlic cloves, lemon slices and bay leaves. Then when its time to stuff the bird I take all that stuff out and put the stuffing in. My family loves it. But if your gonna do it this way I wouldn't try it on a turkey the first time. Use a small roasting chicken and do it. Then if it comes out alright try the turkey. Hope this helped.

What we do is cook the stuffing the night before thanksgiving. Then we put it in the fridge to cool it down all night and then we put it into the bird so that both are the same temperature. If you put something hot into something thats not the same temp that could be a big problem make you sick and stuff.
Anyway, that way the stuffing is actually already cooked inside and you are just getting the flavor and benefits of the turkey... just make sure the turkey is good and cooked and you will be just fine!

It is very safe to cook the stuffing in the turkey , but I would put the stuffing in towards the last 3 hours of the turkey being done.

Perfectly safe. That's the way you are supposed to do it. Make sure you remove all the innards and keep the cavity clean.

Fine, as long as you add it to the total weight, and allow 20 minutes per lb.

When I went to the health dept to renew my food handler's card, they said that even if it's a popular method, it's not safe at all.
