mostly because they are bored. Most people eat when they are bored, and have nothing else to do to occupy them. You feed your body even though your body does not need it, and that is bad! Think of a hobby, or pastime that you have an interest in and enjoy, I have a 85 pound German Shepherd, that loves taking me for walks, but you know what? I always feel better when I get back weather I wanted to go or not! He doesent give me a choice, but it lowered my cholesterol, and I lost a few pounds, and its good for my blood pressure, and it even releases endorphins that is good for your mental health as well! I owe a longer life to my dog, and I have money that I don't have to pay to a gym each month, too! When I get home, I even sleep better at night, and emotionally I feel better as well. You just have to get up and get out, instead of thinking about food all the time, and it will pay off for yourself a million times over!

overeating is caused by repressed emotions, often anxiety and especially anger. biologically in the brain it looks just like alcoholism or drug addiction. and what's worse, is that it's more common.
And to answer "beauty of hte sea's" idea that it coudl be ocd - thats not technically accurate, considering OCD involves a person doing something cause they have a fear somethign will happen if they dont. also food addiction is a pleasurable thing, unlike obsesive compulsive rituals.

emotional stuff such as boredom or depression causes people to turn to food because they think it will satisfy their problems like it satisfies their stomach. Many can also want food because they're used to having a lot of it at one time. If you're the one that has this problem, try staying off it for a while and do something else if your mind turns to food.

It depends. Are you talking about a morbid or moderately obese person? Or are you wondering for a person who is of average weight? Is this something new? Or a lifetime struggle? If the person is overweight and obsesses over food they could have obsessive/compulsive disorder, and if they have this disorder they probably also have related symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks, plus paranoia. The obsession could be over anything, but if it's over food, then most likely it developed while they were young and watched their mother obsess over food. And therefore it's a comfort zone for them.
If it's a medical symptom, it could be a cause from a thyroid disorder, pre or post-menopausal symptoms, a parasite like worms, or any number of other conditions.

In a way it is related with the state of mind...some people when they are sad they find satisfaction in food, others just want to eat and not to think about their own problems...but of course there are and some kind of diesases when you think just to eat.

It is a mental disorder like Alcoholism and drug abuse.
But my guess would be something happened in there lives that it triggered one or more of these "safe" places in the mind.
