I am a girl from a liberal middle eastern family, and the fact that I'm living in a conservative society bothers me sometimes, I was offered a scholarship to Birgham Young university, as from what I read and heard from people about the state and mormon's issue fears me...I am not racist nor prejudice, I respect their beliefs, but I would like to know how much this is going to affect my life as a forign student

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I also attended BYU and come from a mixed heritage background. I am Colombian/Italian and have lived overseas much of my life. I felt very comfortable there and met many unique and kind people.

BYU is also a very good school with a very good reputation. You will get a good education there. You will definitely be a minority there, but LDS people in general are accepting, kind, and fun loving. Utah is also a very beautiful place with many sites to see and much history. If you are looking to hang out with a lot of other middle eastern families, its definitely not the university for you. However, if you want good people, a new culture, good clean fun, and a good education, I think it would be an excellent choice.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Here is a link to BYU's international services page. Perhaps they can put you in contact with someone who is there and can share their experiences. Good luck!

I like foreigners, and the church does not discriminate because of race. If you chose to come to Utah i think you will enjoy it and will learn a lot. There are plenty of kind and good natured people here, but just like every where else, we have our share of creeps.

Yes we do have a high standard, you will be surprised what following the standards of the church can do for you.

With love,
NIK

Well, if you are not used to strict standards, don't attend BYU. THere are standards you have to live by in order to be a student there...and you will probably be with a huge majority of LDS students since it is a private LDS school...

Working and living in Utah is "interesting" if you do it as a non-Mormon. I know of people who were fired on the spot because they weren't Mormons. That kind of stuff goes on way too much there.
