It's very dangerous if you don,t know wath you do. You need to go on your bios to upgrade it. But make sure is that you realy need. If there is a pan of electricity in the time you do it, you will need another pc with the same chipset to arrange that.

Prior to upgrading to windows XP , update the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) if a BIOS update is available for your PC. BIOS updates are available on the HP Web site in the software and drivers section of your product suport page. For more information about how to update the BIOS, refer to the HP support document Updating the BIOS:

BIOS: Basic Instruction Operating System. It is the information contained inside the roms of your computer. (the big black silicon chips excluding your cpu[central processing unit]) Updating your bios requires flashing your roms. Hence you need a flash program and your latest bios update available on the internet.

WARNING: Do it wrong and you will be throwing out you computer.

you need to find out who made your bios, there are 3, (almost) exclusive makers, download a program called "Everest" home edition. install it and open it, when it's open click "computer" , then "summary" and look where it says "bios type", it will let you know what it is, then click on the bios link it displays and it will take you to the product information, which will take you to the manufacturers website, then search for a bios flash utility that will be compatible to your specific bios, be very careful using this utility...if you have data to save, make sure its backed up first, good luck

Try HP's Instant support page at http://instantsupport.hp.com. There you can search the knowledge base and get more information about your HP Pavillion model.
