I agree with you. I read all the Lord of the Rings books about eight years before the movie came out. Considering how complex the specifics were in the book, its amazing the near perfect film adaption they did. I wish all film directors had enough sense to keep that true to the original literature.

I haven't seen Lord of the Rings yet, so I can't judge on that.

The one I think is the best book to film adaptation is : "Ordinary People".......well, if you like the fact the film is verrrrry similar to the book.

The best adaptation which took some freedom to adapt parts of the book is, without a doubt, : "Sybil"!!

Number one pick -- The Green Mile. They follow the book almost perfectly, unlike many movies.

Second pick -- Shawshank Redemption. This was a great movie made from a short story.

You know, I'd have to go with "Die Hard," based on a book that was mediocre at best (titled "Nobody Lives Forever" or "Nothing Lasts Forever," I can't remember the exact wording). It's one thing to take a good book and make a good movie, but quite another to take a dry, leave-it-on-the-bookshelf novel and turn it into a blockbuster.

It's probably a lot before your time but "In Cold Blood" in 1967 was just as chilling as the book.
