A Tiger in the bed,
A Mink in the wardrobe
A Jaguar in the garage
And A Jackass to pay for it all.
Bet this cheered you up.

A guinea pig! They are always overlooked at the pet stores but they are very affectionate. When I get home every day, mine squeals in happiness until I come pet her and give her a carrot. They aren't like hamsters or fish that you really just watch and don't interact with.
Also, I know that a pet stores here in Indianapolis gives them away when you buy and cage and supplies so maybe other places do that. Otherwise, they are only about $20 and live for a long time.

Get a Russian Tortoise. The have the funniest "personalities" and make me laugh. Read up on them, they need specialized equipment to be healthy, but other than that, they're great.
They stay small and are vegetarians, so you don't have to feed them yucky bugs.
Chinese Box Turtles also stay small, but need the yucky bugs. Very good pets.
Rats make good pets too. If you can't have a dog or cat these are almost as good.

Why don`t you do horse riding, you have the luxury of being able to spend lots of time with it, ride it and take care of it. But you have the hassle of paying for stabling, food, vet and farrier bills. Riding also keeps you fit, there are lots of clubs. Then there are the functions/parties so you make new friends as well. This has to be alot better than sitting at home looking at a pet.

How about a hamster or a guinea pig they are cute or maybe just somebody to talk to would help. Reptiles need expensive equipment and special creepy crawlies to eat I wouldn't like that.

Sugar gliders are pretty possums and extremely cute and needy
you will always feel wanted.
My mate's gets into his pockets and his hood and hangs on to his ankles when he wants to pop to the shop.
He keeps threatening to buy a Quoll, Do you think he should?
But a glider is not just for Christmas, They can live upto 15 years

Well I have two ferrets. They always cheer me up when I'm upset. They're so care free and hyper. They always make me laugh. Sometimes I wonder if they know when I'm sad.
