Burning something at 1x is like burning a movie at the same time it would take to watch it. 2x is half, 4x is a quarter, etc......

You haven't provided enough information. Which DVD burner are you using (e.g. Lite-On DVD+/1RW DL)? What software are you using to burn the DVD (e.g. Nero, Roxio,...)? What DVD media are you using (e.g.DVD+R DL 4x)?

In addition, a 7GB DVD movie will not fit on a single layered DVD blank. So, are you going to record the video on to a dual layered DVD, which fits 8GB of video, or do you plan to recode it so it will fit on to a single layered DVD?

If you want to speed up burning a movie, use the fastest DVD blanks that your DVD burner can accomodate and, before burning anything, exit all software programs except the burning software program. Since you are using a laptop, use a fully charged battery before burning. Labtops are programmed to slow CPU processing when the battery is running low on power.
