How about Timber - wood, for ship building. Canada has lots of lumber and the Brits were really, really into ship building around that time.

Good Luck

What has driven Men on for centuries? Beaver! Beaver Pelt. Fur. Fur fueled the earliest exploration of Canada's interior. However the true origins of Canada --- ---- FISH. Cod, to be precise, the fishing industry began off the coast of Newfoundland. The only other resourse of note, timber, specifically that which could be used in ship construction. Oak and Cedar and long straight Pine. Other than that Canada was resource poor & cold.

Peace..

PS the exploitation of Canada's fur resourses makes for sad reading. While Natives & a few Europeans understood the need to allow animals time to breed in order to have a sustainable resource, most Europeans simply slaughtered their way West. An Easy time line; every ten years fur trappers had to push on another five hundred miles, leaving behind regions decimated of fur bearing animals. See 'History of the Western Movement,' great book, sad stories. Beaver was once abundant from Sea to Sea, Atlantic to Pacific, now they are acuriosity in text books and maybe a zoo or two.

It's silly to say Canada was resource-poor. As it takes up half a continent it was and is resource-rich, though 19th century people could not access or use things like oil and uranium. However they did use bearskins (the British Guards regiments' bearskin hats still come from Canada), and beaver hats were very fashionable. 'Mad as a hatter' refers to the effects of fumes from the mercury used to stiffen these hats. The Hudson's Bay Company was founded in 1670 and is one of the oldest companies in the world today (still trading as a chain of stores called The Bay, but now owned by an American). The HBC brought fur back to England.

I think seal oil was used for fuel. And there was a good description by an explorer about the schools of cod being so dense they slowed the ships down.
