This question has been around for years, and I believe it's it used predominately as a vehicle for physics & philosophy boffins to bang on about how much they know.
You know, you've seen them do it at parties and the like. They sit in a corner all droopy and boring until BANG! some one mentions something like this and suddenly their ears prick up and their little hearts start beating with excitement, they straighten their bent Hunchback of Notre Dame-like spines as they recognise an entry into conversation. Then there is a little self important "a-hem" before they lift their weak little chins and launch into what is possibly the most boring and pompous spiel you are ever likey to endure.
Does it make a sound when you are there? Of course. Why wouldn't it make a sound just because no one can hear it? And no, this is not open to debate. It just happens this way - OK.

this really winds me up! i think of course it makes a sound, but if theres noone round to here it then the vibrations in the air (that is what sound is made of) would never reach anywhere, would just fade away to nothing and so it wouln't rebound off an eardrum which would make the sound comprehensible and actually make a sound......see, i'm confused too!

It makes a sound and no one hears it because no one is around. Just becuase no one percieves the sound that does not mean it does not exist.

When you so no one you may mean no humans to hear. There is bound to be some creature near to hear, be it insect , mammal or plant to register the noise. So of course there is a sound - it is it's own self regardless of who or what hears it.

A sound is only a sound if the sound is heard. Therefore, if no sound is heard then said sound does not exist. Sounds funny huh?

Only for your guidance, this is the most common
question asked on Q&A. It is a basic phylosofical
question that asks , and the answer is yes
"I heard it, therefore I exist".
