A cat-babysitter would be perfect, that way you will only have a
cat for short time periods, most likely weekends. Then you can
prove your worthiness of having your own !

Your dad is right... Moving around is hard on cats and when you are 18 and ready to move away, most places won't take cats without deposits and additional rent, so kitty would have to stay with dad. That would be hard on both of you. I told my kids no uncaged pets until they move out on their own. Cats can live up to and over 20 yrs and they are only kittens for a short while. So wait until you have a secure and stable place to have your pet when you are an adult. As for volunteering, YES! Call your local rescue shelter or no kill shelter. Those kitties need some lovin'. But it won't just be play, volunteers help clean up after the cats and feed and water, etc. Good Luck...and remember, the best things come to those who wait. When you are older and can care for a cat for it's whole life and not just part of it, you will enjoy it much much more.

if there's a local humane society or animal shelter, they'll probably let you volunteer there. some shelters even have pet TLC teams, where your only job is to give some love to dogs and cats! i think those are volunteer also.
if there's a 4-H group in your area, you might want to try to get involved with animals there too.
and i'm sure if you are a responsible 12 year old, people would pay you to take care of their pets while they're away. just keep asking around or post some signs.

You are not too young at all! I started volunteering at a humane society/animal shelter when I was around 7 or 8yrs old. I mostly cuddled the dogs and cats, cleaned food bowls, and walked the smaller sized dogs. Also, my shelter tried to raise money by selling their own calendars each year, so I helped by taking a bunch of them and then going door-to-door to sell the calendars to my neighbors. It raised a lot of money for the shelter, and my neighbors were more than willing to help!
Take care!
